History

SIRCA (Securities Industry Research Centre of Asia-Pacific) was established in 1994 as a joint venture between 4 universities, its purpose being to work with industry to improve the efficiency of Australian capital markets. SIRCA’s Member Universities now number 26 across Australia and New Zealand with research activity spanning over-the-counter and exchange traded markets, funds management and accounting, and e-business technology.

SIRCA’s principal activity has centred on the sharing of infrastructure across industry and academia, encompassing super computing power; skilled research and programming personnel; creation and maintenance of market databases; thought leadership through industry, academic and government networks.

Structure

SIRCA is a non-profit company limited by guarantee. SIRCA is governed by a board comprising senior representatives from member universities, commercial organisations, government representatives and industry associations.

SIRCA comprises full time staff; resident PhD students sponsored by SIRCA or industry partners; Australian and visiting academics; programming, technology, and project management support staff for academic research initiatives.

Research activity is organised around research centres or collectives, jointly managed by academics and SIRCA management. This collective structure facilitates a sharing of knowledge amongst people with a common interest or research motive.
