1 generous Scholarship relating to Identity Fraud

We are seeking a graduate with qualifications in Information Systems.

A cross-disciplinary team of researchers from five universities have been awarded an ARC Linkage Grant to investigate identity fraud in collaboration with the AUSTRAC Proof of Identity Steering Committee. Identity fraud is recognised as a serious and significant problem in Australia by Government and industry, with current estimates of losses ranging up to $1.1 billion per annum. The cross-disciplinary team aims to research identity fraud from an organisational and wider social perspective by investigating control, management and policy alternatives. Some of the outcomes are expected to include conceptual frameworks, effects and costing models of identity fraud, successful strategies for organisational management control, new techniques to improve prevention and detection, and comparative evaluations of social, legal and privacy implications.

Reflecting the scope and scale of this research program, the chief investigators on the grant include experts in the fields of Information Technology, Financial Management, Criminology and Law. The team will be supported by SIRCA’s world-class research facilities located in Sydney’s CBD and at the Australian Technology Park at Redfern. The team comprises:

Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship to support PhD study in ID fraud profiling. We seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic scholar from the discipline above, who wishes to work in the area of identity fraud.

The successful candidate will have a 1st class or 2/1 honours degree in the discipline above, or a Masters degree with a significant research component, a strong academic record, strong written and verbal communications skills in English, and an ability to work in a team environment. The successful applicant will usually work closely with one or more industry partners, and will be enrolled at The University of New South Wales.

Subject to satisfactory performance, the scholarship is tenable for three years, commencing from the first semester of 2004. A tax free stipend of up to a maximum of $30,000 based on experience is available.
